I've watched Haibane Renmei twice now and I still think it is my favorite anime series out there. You did a fantastic review and I learned some things like the book by Haruki Murakami. I plan to go pick that up this week thanks to your review. Great job, it looked like you put a lot of thought and effort into making it.

Can you recommend me an anime. I've just finished angel beats and it was awesome... My favorites are Code Geass, Death Note, Kaiji, One Outs, Eureka 7, Gundam 00, Gurren Lagann, Fate/stay night
I like emotional anime but I have like a border of tolerance for moe, or girly stuff, or gayness, I like more mature drawing styles like Death Note, but Code Geass drawing is good too, and a balance of male/female characters, I don't like too many females... Story + emotion matter he most, plot twists

@ONVPodcast I haven't read that, nor any of Murakami's work - I don't know how many times I've been recommended something or other of his and never got around to it.
I'd be interested in checking that out, I wasn't aware Haibane Renmei was based on anything in particular!

@SuperKingNova anime and manga prices usually are affected by supply on amazon, they charge 100-400 for stuff thats sold out , just check back in a week or two

Whoa it's pretty expensive on amazon.......... for the whole collection?
Thanks for this, really insightful review. I like the way you assessed the setting, themes, and characters, rather than just superficial aspects of the series I lost count of how many times I've watched Haibane Renmei from start to finish, and it remains one of my all-time favourites for its originality, subtlety, themes, music, and beauty.

@AtrophySyntrophy Thanks for the kind words! Always nice to see another fan of such a beautiful series.
Have you read Haruki Murakami's "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World"? It's interesting to see the genesis of the Haibane world in there.
