MICHAEL CAZAUBON : YOUTH CHAMPION AND MAN OF ACTION MISSED

SOUFRIERE, Saint Lucia (April 12, 2011) - The sudden passing of Michael Cazaubon was seen as a loss for many sectors of Saint Lucia's society, according to Senator Allen Chastanet.

The 42 year-old "Yatar," as he was affectionately known, was described by the Senator as a man "who never did things for recognition but because they needed to be done. He truly was a man of the moment and an individual with the greatest compassion for others."

Senator Chastanet, Saint Lucia's Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, recalled Cazaubon's "generosity, his commitment to help the youth and those less fortunate," noting that he was "instrumental in getting young people involved in sports across the community."

Cazaubon was vice chairman of the United Workers Party's Soufrière/ Fond St. Jacques branch, a contractor and community stalwart.


The senator said party members, the constituency branch and Saint Lucians who knew him "are sharing in the huge loss of such a young man."

"Yatar," who died of an aneurysm, was active in the National Youth Council since a teenager and had a nonpartisan approach to community development.

Senator Chastanet supports the efforts underway to name the Soufrière Stadium after Cazaubon. "Whilst it would have been great for him to have been given this honour while he was alive, sometimes it takes someone's passing for us to really and truly appreciate that person. Perhaps people felt he still had so much time left that recognition could have waited."

Comforting his family, friends and colleagues, the senator said "what we can do is to let everyone in the community know what he meant to all of us and I think this is why the stadium idea is being proposed."

"'Yatar definitely was a man of action, he did not question why things were a certain way, instead, he simply set about to change things for the better. We will forever be reminded and inspired by his spirit and of the fact that together, we can make a difference - Farewell my brother, farewell."
