One other thing ..regarding welfare ... I see it as part of national security . I know the right wing view is " take away the handouts and these people would be forced to get jobs " but that is much too simple . First of all , many if not most of these people are completely unemployable for any number of reasons .. mental illness , addiction , social dysfunction , or they are just plain dumb . Welfare protects society from these people . It is an important program .

@golfdad75 ... Its not the poor people I worry about it is definitely the middle class and even upper middle class . I went to an Ivy League School . I have a liberal arts degree ( poli sci ) .. most people at my school earned liberal arts degrees . Job prospects aside , they are useless when compared to the importance of math and science . And at my school we are hardly talking about poor people .

@sweetfly66 You know I am not sure that our top students are any worse or better than the best from Japan, Germany, or any developed country. I do feel that our poor students are poorer. Nothing to back that up but just a gut feeloing.Bit why should poor people strive to get better. the gov't is going to take care of them,

@golfdad75 .... While that may be true , the bigger problem is that we are lagging so far behind in math and science than the rest of the world . Even in private schools . I dont know why this is , but nationwide , no matter if it is public school or private school ... we suck at math and science . This is unfortunate because math and science is what makes the world go `round .

@sweetfly66 I agree with your comments. I am a 30 yr hs teacher. Whne we start educating those who want to be educated and discard those who don't it will not change. I tell my students in 10 to 15 yeras only the poorest will send their kids to public schools.

@golfdad75 .... The reason there were very few Americans at U of Tokyo is because it is very difficult to get a visa to live in Japan and next to impossible to get citizenship . Maybe the U.S. military has some sort of agreemant with U of Tokyo . Regarding your other point about who goes to American Universities ...thanks for making my point , more foreigners at them than Americans . It is because American higher education is world class but American elementary and secondary ed are inferior .
