During my weekend visit to Brick Lane's markets and galleries, I met Roberto Costa, a Brazilian artist who left his country and job 20 years ago and now lives in London to focus on creating a unique style of vintage costume jewellery. It all started by accident, when he was bored with his office job and decided to create jewellery for his friends who soon became regular customers.

Each of Roberto's creations is unique as he improvises a new design depending on his mood and inspired by the material that he personally collects; as he gets inspired by the Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian pieces as well as the 1930-1950 period designs.

By combining the old objects, with the latest fashion trends, Roberto was able to "create one-off pieces of art for his customers to keep forever" that also have stories behind them. What is also important to him is that 99% of the material he uses for his upcycled artistic masterpieces is recycled metal and old objects such as broken watches, vintage insignia, chains and sepia Victorian photos. His enthusiasm and passion to use sustainable material is infectious to other artists in the market, who are now following this trend.

His trendy collection is very appealing to the London young hippie crowd as well as sophisticated fashionistas alike.
