your not supposed to cut passed your second knuckle. you will be docked points at state board and you can also cut yourself.

@lasadgirl28 No, they would ask you to do a razor guideline on the back, and razor layers up the nape are, followed with scissors. They will check your haircut, but, don't worry; quality is only 2 points.

Great job on explaining the video. To all the youtube viewers, there has been a new cosmetologist license test. It's called the NIC Test. Basically, a cosmetologist license test that is the same in all states.

@disconnectedrumors you're right. i was thinking the same thing when i was watching. And not only can you cut yourself, but you also get an uneven cut, because your fingers have more weight past the 2nd knuckle. So it actually brings your line up instead of straight across. :)

thank you for posting a video, it's difficult finding a good 90 guideline. I'm taking my state board for the second time next tuesday.. the first time I cut my finger :(
I have a question though, in this you just used the razor around the edges, won't they ask you to cut the entire back/nape area with the razor?

@misssmiles00 If they have a cosmetology program, they should offer all; hair, face, and nail classes. Maybe you went to a barber school. In California a lot of Beauty Schools offer Cosmetology Programs. Some have part-time evening programs, that take a year or a little more. Try the occupational centers from your local school district, The L.A. Unified School District Adult Education offers Cosmetology classes. You can also try the Private schools at your area that offer financial aid.
stateboard does check your haircut individually when your done

@LovelyXBunny True, now they do check your haircut, but before September 2011 they didn't. They give you 2 points for performance.

This is a great video! I went to a pivot point school, where I learned a completely different method for doing a 90. I will have to try it this way, it makes so much more sense to me. Thank you for posting!

@michelemybell55 You welcome! It's always good to know alternate cutting techniques, since people have different hair length and texture. Some precision haircutting techniques require longer time to do, but knowing a faster way would address the needs of those clients, who are in a hurry.

also do you have to use the razor before using the scissors?

@Dori623 Yes, for the new NIC test, you need to start with the razor; razor guideline the middle of the nape, and then continue cutting with the scissors.
