Puy means well. Le puy en velay is 'the well in the valley.' I know this because this is my own place of birth.

@PuyARUS I am not a native French speaker so I am not sure of the 'exact' meaning of Puy- but basically it seems to be a rounded volcano. The town of Le Puy en Velay is basically set in an old volcanic crater and you climb up out of it when you do the walk I did. There are other places in the region with "puy' in the name, eg Puy-de-Dome.

Un jour j'espere retourner a Le Puy. Peut-être je pourrai marcher là de Cluny ou de Genève.
