I have only come to appreciate this talent in the last few years. He wrote and sang some of the best music ever. Dead at 29 what a loss. I'm definitely going to listen to more of his music.

Information I have, says Hank Sr. who died January 1, 1953, recorded this song, September 1952, but it was released posthumously early 1953. He came up with the lyrics while driving to Louisiana with his then, fiancee, Billie Jean Eshlimar, on their way to tell her parents of their engagement after his "turbulent" marriage to Audrey had ended.

When I was young my grand mother, who was born in the 1890's, told me she sang this song when she was a young girl. That would be before Hank was born.. She won't lie to me. I believe hank wrote it ,but the tune was very old. if you listen to the Kitty Wells response to cold cold heart that Hank wrote, you can see Hank beginning to piece it together then.
