@ivankinsman Having straight lines both ways helps you to keep the weeds down by hoeing. made that mistake . keep your eye out for some metal mesh with squares about 2 inch square. You can place this on the bed and plant in the squares keeping exact distances. Tend to find 4" spacing is a bit tight to get the hoe between easily. Always that balance between maximising space . First time planted shallots i didnt know they spread to quite a big clump so plant wider than onions

Just started my first allotment and found all your clips very helpful. Planning to get my first ever onion sets in next week!

@ivankinsman We all have our own ways of doing things. As long as it works for you, then that's fine. Perfectly straight lines...if someone can manage those, I'd love to know how they managed it. I like wonky vegetables and wonky lines, makes it more homely.

Good tip about the stones/soil warmth. For a drill, I usually just run the edge of a hoe down parallel to the string - not always completely straight but seems to do the job. Your method looks good but, with the amount of seed we plant, think it would take me too long!
Great explanation.. thx

Thanks for the tip on carrot and onion fly.

@sparkes64 That's ok. It's good when you find plants that compliment each other.

Yes, I love the gardening books/magazines that always have dead-straight lines in their planting diagrams as well as immaculate gardens in their photographs e.g. never a weed in sight. Not really a reflection of how it turns out in practice...

@ivankinsman Exactly. They've obviously got too much time on their hands.
