So I just tested as being low on niacin. How? I have been taking between 100 and 600 mg a day.

@777bigred "Orthomolecular Medicine for Everyone" by Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD is good. It helps to show people that proper nutrients can solve medical problems that most doctors give drugs for. Larry Hobbs

@777bigred My guess is that niacin is BETTER for longevity than niacinamide because niacin improves cholesterol levels whereas niacinamide does not. It is best to take it after eating meals. Beware that niacin causes FLUSHING. Some people do NOT like this. My guess is that the flushing, which is caused by histamine release, provides some of the benefits, therefore, I look at it as a GOOD thing. 1500-3000 mg per day is reasonable. If you take time-released niacin, don't exceed 1500 mg per day.

Forgot to ask. What books would you recommend for over all good health?

So are you saying that Niacin is better to take than B3?

@666katch Both niacin (nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (also called nicotinamide) are vitamin B3, however, my guess is that niacin is better because it improves cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels whereas niacinamide does not. There is also No-Flush Niacin -- Inositol hexanicotinate -- but Luke Bucci, PhD said that it does not improve cholesterol levels as much as niacin, therefore, my guess is that niacin is the best form of vitamin B3 for increasing longevity. @maximusdecimus85 Thanks for your comment. I am sorry to hear that you are depressed. Yes, orthomolecular medicine can help. See the videos about Joan Mathews Larson, PhD. She has been treating anxiety and depression (and drug and alcohol problems) with orthomolecular medicine for 32 years. She is the best. She also has a lot of great stuff on her website, JoanMathewsLarson[dot]com. She notes that when you figure out what is wrong and fix it, people get better very fast. Larry Hobbs

@maximusdecimus85 Search for the video titled "Dramatic Before & After Picture of depressed woman treated w nutritional therapy, Joan Larson, PhD". It shows a woman who had been treated with drugs for depression for 14 years who looks terribly depressed, and then shows how healthy and happy she looks just 6 months after being treated with orthomolecular medicine at Dr. Larson's clinic. The before and after pictures are amazing. All doctors giving drugs for depression should watch it. Larry Hobbs

@maximusdecimus85 One other thing to note about Joan Mathews Larson, PhD is that she does tests for everything to prove what is wrong. Modern psychiatry does not do ANY lab tests. Modern psychiatry diagnoses everything from a book. I believe this is because the drug companies don't want psychiatrist doing lab tests because then they would figure out what is really wrong and would realize that nutritional therapies can solve the problem. It is very unfortunate. Larry Hobbs
