My First Western Riding Lesson

Please read all of this. I have ridden English for about 3 years... this is my first western lesson. Comment with your thoughts pwese. My Dad records this but he'd rather look at me then look at a camera. I dont see the difference but whatever. This one isnt very good but I plan on putting others up. Be on the lookout for my second western lesson hopefully i will add music to make it more interesting. It will be much better both recording and riding I promise. I was SO scared, first time cantering in a LONG time. My instincts told me to crunch my legs up and crouch down like a hunter jumper (thats what i used to do) kinda funny really. not posting to his awesome trot was kinda easy, but trying not to crouch out of SLIGHT fear (how can you not trust this horse) and habit is MUCH MUCH harder. Please no flamers, they are so annoying. like there isnt enuff bad crap in the world without flamers adding to it. But... creative criticism is very much appreciated and even welcome. thx 4 taking time to read this and hopefully comment.

Wow, this looks amazing. I do canter myself, but english. Western pleasure just looks so mch more relaxed and calm and OH MHY GHOD I CANT WAIT TILL WEDNSDAY! Im gonna have my first western pleasure lesson. I cant wait to just sit that canter as if im on a rocking- couch!

That was really good for your first time riding western. When your cantering it helps to keep your heels down really far. My horse has a rocking horse canter sometimes and when my heels are down really far its a lot easier to stay ballenced. Good job though! :-D

@HorseyQueen120 Thank you. Even when I did English, keeping my heels down was hard for me. I'm thinking about doing some English from time to time, just so that I don't lose all of my memories of it.

Also, western pleasure is not lazy. You have to still get the horse into the bridle, keep him in a frame, and move well. A lope shouldnt make the horse look lame. They may rock their head up and down a little with the movement, but its not lameness. They also have extended jog.

It's not about keeping your heels down, contrary to belief. Its about keeping the weight down through your legs into the stirrups. You should feel relaxed and like your legs are carrying all of your weight in them. This will keep you deeper in the seat and more stable.

ok i ride western and i love it im on the heavy side and its more easy and not all the gaits are slow i have a twh and he does western and he has fast gaits and i think you did vary well for it being your frist time i love western and i think its more about having fun and being relaxed and english you get to have fun and be grace ful the same with western i think its a good thing if you like both
