the state of utah annonced that they recommend a 5 day kit rather than a 3 day kit like hls recomends.

@blankthree: katrina was an isolated event. a 72 hour bag is believed sufficient because that's the estimated time before any sort of assistance arrives.

Lemon cookies are yummy! i hear there's orange ones out there too, switch it up a little.
The longevity, ease of prep (none needed), small space, and weight make the food bars work quite well in a pinch, and require no other kit to make them edible.

The government says 72 hours ideally you want to be prepared for 30 days. Mr. Prepared says that you should ideally be prepared for 7 days but 30 days are better. A lot of people wait to be prepared. Havng a 72 hour kit is a great start.

why just 72 hours? hurricane rita and katrina proved that you need more like 2 weeks to be self reliant.
