It is revealed after the opening ceremonies that part of the footprint fireworks footage were computer generated and it took about a year to make. The footprint fireworks did occur outside the stadium, but the TV and stadium audiences watched the pre-recorded version.

The organizers wanted a perfect show rather than the real less than perfect footprint shape in the middle of the Beijing smog at night.

The final shot from inside the stadium shows 3 actual footprints over the stadium.

Well, the Olympic committee still said that it would be dangerous to risk lives flying a media helicopter over the city just to catch footprints.

True, however the only real footage of those footprints are amateur videos, and thanks to the large pirated Shanzai phone community selling in China most of these are crap videos and the small minority are near impossible to find in YouTube under 5 minutes.

    Still a shame.

So there's no real footage of the footprints (except the last ones over the stadium)? That's a shame. Pyrotechnicians worked hard on that and we're never gonna see it. Who cares if it's not perfect. Oh wait, the chinese government cares because in their desperation to strengthen their image they don't notice that they are doing the exact opposite.
