Way back in December 2006 I made a short film showing my visit to 51 Market in Baotou, China. Here is the re-edited version, fully extended and featuring the complete scene with the Santa Claus door decoration! Part 2 will follow later.

  • Mister Duncan,you made a mistake, 51 means 1st May, labor day , hehe...

  • Yes, I'm aware of the meaning. The locals call it 51 Market. There is also an 81 Park.

  • 16 yuan for two pieces of santa claus, it's a little bit expensive. I think you should learn some bargain skills in China. good luck next time.

  • Thank you for your comment. I was aware that the price was high, but I was not going to fuss over a few Yuan. You should have seen me when I was buying furniture for my apartment. I spent a whole afternoon bartering with shopkeepers over the prices...It was actually great fun! (Misterduncan)

  • Hi Mr.Duncan, the "dry sweet tomatos" which Zhang Wei showed you in your episode of "51 market Baotou China. Part 1" were actually dry persimmons I think. The dry persimmons are very popular in China. I like your style of teaching English. I am watching your English Lessons in the other side of the world--New Zealand. Thanks very much for your videos.

  • the only thing you interested in is Chrismas decorating.

And you are good at Chinese

  • oh, that is not dried tomato, that is dried persimmon.

There is no information in wikipedia. But is tasted like honeyed sunshine

  • 81 is 1st August, the foundation day of People's Liberation Army

BTW, thanks a lot, I have learnt so much from your lessons.

  • i think that dried tomato is actually a persimmon no?

  • any reports on Bautou clubbing scene?

thanks for the posts they are kinda cute I guess .. looks damn chilly in winter

  • hahahha,what furniture?

The price of furniture is always expensive in China!i think it's good for lacking of wood!
