The film notes from the underground is based around the first section of the book of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. However the script (written by Steve Evans) was modernized and therefore greatly removed from the original text. Upon first reading the book I often remembered one of Aesops fables, the one in which a donkey cant decide which bale of hay to eat, so decides to eat neither and starves to death. That was always the most interesting dynamic for me within this idea. Many people cannot decide what purpose best serves them in life. This idea in its most straightforward form is at first quite dull and is dealt with in many films. However I wanted to take this theme to its most extreme, and then to its most extreme conclusion. I decided to make him the donkey. There was no way he was ever going to choose to live one way or the other. He would wrestle with it until it drove him insane. Until, like the donkey, it killed him. This is the broad brush stroke with which the film is illustrated.
