Ernest Chausson (1855-1899)

Le Charme, op. 2 n°2
text: Armand Silvestre (1837-1901)

Ann Murray, mezzo-soprano
Graham Johnson, piano
1999

Quand ton sourire me surprit,
Je sentis frémir tout mon être,
Mais ce qui domptait nous esprit,
Je ne pus d'abord le connaître.

Quand ton regard tomba sur moi,
Je sentis mon âme se fondre,
Mais ce que serait cet émoi,
Je ne pus d'abord en répondre.

Ce qui me vainquit à jamais,
Ce fut un plus douloureux charme;
Et je n'ai su que je t'aimais,
Qu'en voyant ta première larme.

[ When your smile surprised me...

  • @boudoir83 correct vocal technique still, by definition, has vibrato. Murray got a heck of a wobble as she got older, but this sounds very nicely controlled.

  • @boudoir83 But vibrato helps to relax the music. . .

  • Too much vibrato... this is French music, not Italian...

  • She performs this flawlessly. Her diction is impeccable. Thanks for sharing!

  • Learning this for my Grade 6. It's a beautiful song. The words are so meaningful and one can be really expressive with it. Who are the handsome chaps I wonder?
