Well, it might not have been much of a fighter but it was a great test-bed for ejection seats.

Yak-38 VTOD
Vertical TakeOff and Die

i love soviet planez but this one was really a piece of shit. anyway americans didnt had much more success in vtol. they just bought the brit harrier, modified its canopy and called it a us plane. i'm tellin ya, in vtol its the brits who own
-
The first Soviet aircraft with vertical take-off was a Yak-36
-
Good for some practice, bad as an actual weapon. To think Lockheed made the same mistake....
-
This aircraft was just a propaganda tool to say "hey look we got VTOL so suck it!" With the poor design and unreliable nature the people who allowed these planes to fly should have been jailed for putting so many pilots lives at risk.
-
The accident, shown in this video was caused by emergency system failure, not aircraft's own. The system had a false alert and ejected pilot. So it was. Read about that somwhere before.
-
@krackersdave The original Hawker P 1127 (Harrier predecessor) first flew in 1960. sturmovyk is thinking of the Harrier 2 and forgetting about the original Harrier
-
And what is our answer? Use the same system on our F-35B

its a HEF, a huge embarrassing failure

Are you kidding, the pilots used to fake illness to avoid having to fly the POS.
The lift engines had a 25 hour service life.
The Russkies make some great planes but the Yak38 sure as hell wasn't one of them.
