Ma Chao went to serve Zhang Lu first (at this point in time here) after his defeat to Cao Cao. According to the book (which the movie is based off of), Ma Chao was essentially tricked into joining Liu Bei. Not that it really took much at all since Ma Chao preferred an ambitious and strong leader rival enough for Cao Cao. It was an inevitable fate really and honestly this duel here probably helped Ma Chao and Zhang Fei solidify friendhips.

@magma3000 the Five Tigers were fiction. But since were talking bout the novel. The 5 tigers were just Shu's most famous and fierce warriors. And Ma Chao was probably as famous as Guan Yu.

Can someone explain to me how Ma Chao got to be in the Five Tiger Generals? I mean, yeah he faced against Zhang Fei and Xu Chu. Made Cao Cao retreat and cut his beard. Was compared to Lu Bu. But here's the thing, how did he get into the Five Tiger Generals because there wasn't that much history about his service in Shu besides execution of Peng Yang, and Han Zhong territory.

@MasamuneAzure Legend goes both ways! Look in both encyclopedias* and you will see that Hua Xiong was in charge of the frontal attack illing Ma Teng. Cao Cao just atacked Tog gate after making it where Ma Chao and Ma Dai go to Liu Bei. I'm pretty sure

@Modernwarfaregeek99 No. Ma Teng was a political prisoner of Cao Cao's. When Cao Cao marched to take Hanzhong, Ma Chao thought Cao Cao was going to destroy him, So Chao and Han Sui went to battle Cao Cao. Cao Cao executed Ma Teng because of Chao attacking him.

Ma Chao lost against Cao Cao and fled to Zhang Lu(Governor of Hanzhong.) He later went and surrendered to Liu Bei who was warring with Liu Zhang.

@darkvincent11 Ma Chao was once on s father's army, before Dong Zhuo attacked and killed Ma Teng Ma Chao's father. This battle was before Dong Zhuo attacked and Liu Bei went to Ma Teng to make a deal. Ma Cha saw the mand attacked/
