Property Details

The town of Montrose, with its medieval core, is an ideal location on the east coast with easy commuting to Aberdeen and elsewhere by road, rail and air. The amenities are those of a well-structured community with a Carnegie library; supermarkets; leisure-centre; swimming pool; two golf courses; long sandy beaches at Montrose, St Cyrus and Lunan Bay; a tidal basin with migratory birds local shops and street markets and a wide range of local schools. There is also easy access to Lathallan School and secondary schools such as Dundee High School & Robert Gordons College are easily accessed by train.
The Retreat is a Grade A listed building at the heart of the town, close to the Montrose Kirk. The site on which the extensive house stands on is one of the original riggs of the town which dates back to the establishment of the Royal Burgh. The gardens have walls (also listed) which were part of the early structure of the town. The core of the house is probably of early 17th century origin. The present structure was finalised around 1760 when John Ouchterlony established this town house with its grand balustrade stairway, enclosed reception salon (christened the ballroom). The house since then has been in the hands of a range of merchants and a variety of professional owners.

The plasterwork and woodwork are of a quality rarely seen in a private house. The original features included a kitchen range, a bread oven, fire places with Adam period surrounds and fine wrought iron and brass-work. There are sliding-sash windows and working Georgian shutters throughout.

There are five very generous size bedrooms and two bathrooms on the three floors of the West Wing of the house. This Wing also contains the dining room and the library/study. The East Wing which is attached by a magnificent period staircase from 1760 contains the grand salon which is used as a drawing room with a large open fire. Downstairs is a flag-floored early kitchen with a Victorian range, pantries and Belfast sink, along with a utility room.

The vaulted merchants wine cellar contains a full size Edwardian snooker table (included in sale).

A large private, Italian style, court yard is approached by a close from the High Street. This is laid out with flower beds and tubs. The two gardens to the West of the property comprise an upper lawn area and a lower section set out as a divided garden with fruit bushes, a well cultivated vegetable garden and a fruit orchard. There are wonderful views over Montrose Basin and the Angus Glens from both the garden and the house. An annual autumn treat is the return of 50,000 pink-footed geese to the Basin.

This is a unique opportunity to purchase one of the finest private Town Houses in Scotland.
