Using a motion blur technique makes your images more dynamic and adds a feeling of speed. In this video Marcos Ferro demonstrates some techniques, which can be good additions or creative approaches for any sport photography shoot.

Canon EOS 5D
Lenses:
17.0-40.0mm f/4.0
70.0-200.0mm f/2.8
15.0mm Fisheye f/2.8
Shutterspeed: 1/20 -- 1/50
ISO: 50 - 250
F-Stop: 5.6 - 7.1
Software and tools: Adobe Photoshop CS5

You forgot to mention 1).- that you are using a telephoto lens and shooting from some distance, so when you move the telephoto following the subject the blur is more evident, and 2).- you forgot to tell that you are using a remotely triggered flash unit close to where the photographed subject (to make a small flash work, otherwise a distant and small powered flash in the daylight will be hardly noticeable), 3).-hidden from the camera view so it doesn't show in the picture.
