Ultravox's debut album and Bowie's 'Low' used drum machines in '77. They just didn't sound as good as what you could get out of a System 100 if you knew what you were doing. Vince Clarke's favoured source of beats is the semi-modular Arp 2600 - obviously not a dedicated drum machine.

The System 100 is top of my wish list and the keyboard synth part of it alone (without the expander) goes for well over a grand these days). Having said that the entire system in probably still cheaper that a MiniMoog.

Have a listen to the rhythm track on Almost Medieval and ask yourself was there a drum machine on the market at the time that could beat that? Awesome.

@foodafokkarez Roland CR78 came out in 1978. it was programmable. if you were signed to a major label the CR78 would have been AFFORDABLE.
i digress, you seem to be missing my point some what. Phil says NO ONE HAD INVENTED DRUM MACHINES around that time....... i was merely pointing out there were lots of drum machines available around that time ;-)
-
@electrozaps you're right. i think he just got mixed up, i think he meant that his fave drum machine, Linn, came about a couple of years later.
this Roland thing here, unmentioned, is a fab piece of equipment, and today it is a lot more expensive than Moogs!

@electrozaps, which recordings you are aware of that use them back in 1977??

Behold! The GOLDEN ONE...

@electrozaps Yeah there probably were but can you imagine them lot using preset BosaNova beat etc straight off a drum machine? Also, none of them probably had anything like sync out to trigger the sequencer. The first AFFORDABLE programmable drum machine ever made was Boss DR55 and that came out in 1980.I think Daniel Miller also played the drum beats on Warm Leatherette by hands.
