On The Road... with Christine and Ethan Rose Further adventure on our Geekalicious Grand Book Tour:

Ethan makes a Sutton Hoo Anglo Saxon lyre replica from repurposed wood. This is just a glimpse at his process during the making of the first one. He might be making more! He had considerable trouble with the tuning pins. He ended up using screws! Not the prettiest, but it works for now.

Now I just need to learn to play it! I'll be playing it during our new performance piece where I'll be telling the story of "Rowan of the Wood" in the ancient Druidic Bard tradition, as if it were a real Celtic Myth.

Follow us on our Geekalicious Grand Book Tour (through the ups and downs). It's like our own little reality show! Coming to a town near you! Subscribe to TheTuberRose for our biweekly "On The Road..." vlogs, as we travel around the country in our Gypsy Caravan.

  • That plink plink thing was really creepy bro.

  • @combatcommand LOL!

  • If you want to get the most out of the small soundbox next time cut more space from the frame in the soundbox area, the side walls should be no more than 8mm,

I do have a CD_rom how to make Lyres closer to the archeology if you are interested ;)

  • Thanks Michael...

We are interested in that! We'll see about ordering it for future projects.

  • "repurposed wood'?...puh- leeze...

in other words, 'scrap stock', or better yet: ...an old shelf?

  • That's the "green" word for it. Not an old shelf, but it was an old light box. :-D

  • WTF MAN

  • Great vid - love it. I posted a vid response outlining my crazy experience attempting to create a Trossingen lyre copy...

  • I see you've gotten a note from Michael King. I've made two using his plans, with a few modifications. I'm willing to make more concessions to modern methods (like avoiding hide glue) than he is.

I'm not surprised you have trouble with wooden pins; they can be a pain in the pinfeathers. I use zither pins; available from any luthier supply (like Stewart-MacDonald). Not 100% accurate for the time period, but I don't need to stop mid-song to retune!

What kind of wood are you using?

  • I watched it! This is frickin' awesome.
