So awesome - one of my favorite songs just because she sings it so well. I wish she'd hold that high note just a little bit longer just because it's so beautiful.
I love both version of this magical song. Meav has a beautiful voice and I love the instrumentation here while Enya's performance is full of deep emotions, it is more touching. Enya also holds some high notes longer than others who performed this song and this makes her version more classic.
I am a music lover and I also work with audio visual (recording and effects equipment).
On most every album of Enya's, several effects are added to her voice such as flanging, digital delay, digital reverb, phasing, and digital chorusing. This is used in overdubbing her to give a more ethereal sound as opposed to a flat field at the microphone.
They use a very small amount of reverb to compensate for the location and being outdoors usually. There are no other effects used.
Giz, You're right. I listened to Enya's version of this song and it is layered with Delay and reverb... Noticeably so. I prefer the mixing on Celtic Woman's version, the level of reverb is far more natural sounding.
That, and I really really like Méav's voice! It's as Beautiful as she is.
The biggest difference between you Gizmologist and real music-lovers is that they can enjoy the music without depreciating other artists. Your comments are based on false stereotyped phrases instead of your own musical experience. The Enya track contains a crystal clear solo vocal, that is just as perfect as Meav's. I don't know what kind of overdubbing are you talking about. One can prefer this version or the other but everyone should highly respect both performers.
