@sergeiparajanov But even the Carpenter's version uses double/treble-tracking on Karen's voice which sadly loses that natural sound. I like them both, but Barbra's version sounds more relaxing listening. Just my two penn-orth!

@TheCressyboy I take the opposite view in that she sounds so effortless and free. Like I said in my post, it sounds as if she's singing to me. But I so love to hear other peoples opinions.

I ususally tend to favor original recordings over remakes, however, I must say Barbra Streisand's version is beautiful! It's as if she's singing directly to me. Karen's version seems to be more "technical" if that makes any sense. Don't get me wrong, Karen Carpenter is one of my favorite artists. I can't even compare her to Streisand. She's in a class all by herself.

@TheCressyboy ...Fighting it? R U kidding? This is perfect! GREAT job Barbra.

@Rena1934 ...this is quite simply a beautiful version of the song by Barbra S.

Well, K. Carpentar had a superb voice but was not a great singer. This is Streisand's least favourite album... I can think of several far worse.

omg what did she do to this song!!! KAREN CARPENTER FOREVERRR!

I don't think the orchestration helps Barbra in this version. She sounds like she's fighting it rather than working with it. It's not her finest hour

Let's just be grateful that we have both Karen and Barba's superb takes on this great song available for us to share and enjoy. And it should be fun and a delight to compare them; that both singers can convey the same emotional intensity albeit drawn from entirely different pallettes is the key for me here. I absolutely the alternate melodic phrasing that Barbra uses - wonderful stuff.

Karen and Barbra are both superb singers. I love Barbra, but I have to say I prefer the Carpenters version. Barbra messes around with the melody too much, does too many of her tricks and grace notes. Karen does what the great cellist Yo-Yo Ma has said is the most difficult thing in music: to produce a melody simply and sincerely without pimping it up with tricks.
BUTTERFLY was kind of a low point in BS's career. She was trying to sound contemporary, like she was trying to become Helen Reddy
