This video is about the taxonomy and evolution of king crabs, family Lithodidae. These crustaceans are fascinating, as they are actually not related to the true crabs (like Dungeness crab, blue crab, snow crab, etc) but are highly modified hermit crabs. In the north Pacific we have 19 species of king crab. It is thought that this family evolved in the north Pacific.

With the exception of one (which is credited) all of the photos and video clips used are mine.

My slideshow of the family Lithodidae shows the following species:

The Wrinkled Crab - Dermaturus mandtii
Spiny Lithode Crab Acantholithodes hispidus
Northern Hairy Crab Hapalogaster grebnitzkii
Hairy Crab Hapalogaster mertensii
Granular Claw Crab Oedignathus inermis
Scale Crab Placetron wosnessenskii
Many-spined king crab Paralomis multispina
Verrill's king crab Paralomis verrilli
Blue king crab Paralithodes platypus
Red king crab Paralithodes camtschatkana
Kurile king crab Paralithodes brevipes
Golden king crab Lithodes aequispina (2 photos)
Scarlet king crab Lithodes couesi
Heart crab Phyllolithodes pappilosus (2 photos)
Rhinoceros crab Rhinolithodes wosnessenskii

  • First 5 seconds of this video lost all possible credential of the material in the video.

  • @userkc - I am not sure what you mean at all. My intro? How does that affect my credentials in discussing crustacean taxonomy and evolution?

  • can humans mate with crabs?

  • I find this video difficult to masturbate to.

  • im sceard of crabs :/

  • Thank you so much for this, as one teacher to another. Science Daily today had an article on the "invasion" of the Antarctic slopes by king crabs, and I wanted to learn more about them. Yours was extremely informative, and I know how much work it took to do it. Great job, and thank you.

  • Ok, I was looking for a random science video I can't find. Hit this one, and MAN I didn't know crabs were so interesting. SCIENCE!

  • Very instructive: Thanks!

  • @userkc Yeah, it was kind of silly, but who made you the credential king? You certainly aren't the English language king either. Thanks for making this video, LithodidMan!

  • Interesting stuff, keep it coming!
