In Expectation of the Thaw - Lapland - 09

You have just landed in the Arctic Circle, it's cold outside, but you forget the cold because of the other-worldly beauty.

You hear the crunch of ice underfoot as you walk, the quiet is overwhelming. Reindeer pass on the side of the road, Northern Lights pulsate overhead, you've officially entered another world.

In the distance the snow village rises impossibly out of the snow. Flame-lit torches line the pathway towards the entrance. Your heart stops, as you digest the magic of a massive structure built entirely out of ice and snow.

The crowd is thickening, and you are asked to take your seat. You are in the largest ice dome in history. You settle onto a magical bench made out of sculpted ice, and sip the hot lingonberry tea that is handed to you. You see your own breath, as you wait comfortably enveloped in reindeer skins.

The lighting dims, the orchestral music begins and you hear a voice, which takes your breath away. Around you and above you, projected onto the snow walls a gorgeous black and white film appears and mingles with the sculpted ice interior of the dome. Music, film and ice envelop you as you lose yourself in an unforgettable theatrical experience.

This is one of the most unforgettable nights of your life. The music finishes, but stays with you. You find it difficult to leave this moment, but waiting outside is a Lappish dinner of Reindeer and Arctic salmon, ice cold vodka, and the warmth of the sauna next door.
