It's a master switch for the hvac system; we have one, too ... instead of going all the way to the breaker box, we can flick the switch, for example, to change an air filter -- or, install the Nest!
ps Interesting -- noticed at around 1:33 you removed the old thermostat --> and behind the wall paint reveals a circle!
@kitches1991 like @JBinCalifornia said it is a disconnect to the system. Most all systems should have one within 6ft of the air handler.
