Actress Angelina Jolie pledges her commitment to the idea of a designated global day of peace

Actress Angelina Jolie and her former husband, actor Jonny Lee Miller have pledged their support to the central idea of a unique new documentary, that of having a designated day of peace across the world. "Peace One Day", which is directed, produced and written by actor Jeremy Gilley, documents his six year journey to establish the first ever day of global cease-fire and non-violence.
At a screening of the documentary in New York City on Tuesday evening (September 20), Jolie and Miller showed up on the red carpet along with Gilley to show support for his film and for the idea of "World Peace Day" Jolie, swathed in an elegant gray skirt and top, explained what to her what was appealing about the idea of a global day of peace. She said, "In a most beautiful way, you want to work in a better world, but also I have children and I want them to have this peace and I want this, and children like them, I want to have the opportunity to have a day of peace, at least to have some help and some aid."
For establishing that "day of peace", Gilley met with a wide range of world leaders, UN officials, peace activists, Nobel laureates, rock stars and individuals to ultimately reach his goal through the unanimous adoption by United Nations member states of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/282. Gilley said, "Every government in the world, every member state of the United Nations you know listened to an idea and we now have a World Peace Day. That's what was worthwhile, the journey of traveling, meeting the Dalai Lama, Shimon Perez, Amir Mousa, Kofi Annan and many many others, children soldiers, you know ordinary individuals, Burundi, Somalia, India, Sri Lanka. The people wanted a day and that day has now been created - the 21st of September is World Peace Day."
Miller too gave his take on what about "Peace One Day" appealed to him. He said, "You know a person can make a difference. People believe that they can't make a difference these days, people believe that governments are huge totalitarian things, no one's going to be able to get anything done on their own. This is a small illustration that you actually can start to do that."
Gilley hopes that with support such as that shown by Jolie and Miller, he will be able to strengthen the awareness around the new "World Peace Day".
