What happens when a horse gets too old to work? We look at the debate between animal rights protestors fighting to save the lives of old and ailing horses against those selling horses for slaughter.

In 2007 Texas and Illinois introduced state laws banning the slaughter of horses. There are sometimes too many dogs and cats. We don't ship them to a slaughterhouse and export the meat, tells Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the US. Yet some believe that slaughter can be the most humane way for old horses to end their lives. I'd rather see them slaughtered than starved.

the main problem is there are toooo many back yard breeders. Anyone who has a mare feels like they have to have her bred and so ther the problem starts. they find they cant take care of all of them and so sell them and this is where they end up. :(

U change the cycle of life and we change the outcome for every living thing. No, I don't want slaughter but I don't want dead horses laying in some barn starved and you can't see them so it don't bother you. I want that picture in your head bothering you until you begin getting the reason why slaughter was there to begin with. read all my posts in order. Now there are horses suffering from Hepatitis from people committing unspeakable acts with horses. Now we have horses suffering from blood-disorders, genetic problems, neurological problems. Where are all the bodies gonna be buried in the USofA? Just curious. The dead need buried, the bodies are hauled off by the state u live in to be burned up. Make you feel better about no slaughter knowing they are malnurished, people that have money are losing jobs,-it's not breeders, u change the cycle

people are the killers. A guy has three hungry horses and another guy down the road said ill keep the hay till middle of winter youll pay more then. We gave him hay to help him. There are no slaughter houses so people are being ripped off and the animals suffer. by the way the guy selling hay-he owns no animals so he cares only for money. You stopped the slaughter, so now thousands of animals lay suffering and dying because a hay-seller wants to buy a shiny new truck to impress you all

Forty years and three generations of horsepeople in our family and we saw this one coming. For the idiot with the back yard breeder comment. Sit your ass down and shut up. Horses require money, FOOD, and care. Vet,farrier,etc. Been our expirience that young people who dispose of anything or dont take care of it are at the heart of the problem. You look at craigslist-people are begging for hay. Hay dealers are charging more now than ever in history. You can't pay you don't get any-those
