China has surpassed Japan as the U.S. governments largest creditor. China owns at least 10 percent of all U.S. debt, as much as $800 billion dollars.

Brad Setser of the Council on Foreign Relations speaks with Martin Savidge about the potential upset of the balance of power and influence between the U.S. and China.

  • Chinese are money mongers. And money mongers are not ambitious for world domination. China will never be a superpower cuz no Chinese want to waste their lives for fighting any fucking wars~

  • Go china!

  • @stephentsang2000 there more of a superpower than the us mate, how can a country be a super power when its in debt...?

  • 21st century belongs to Asian Countries!

  • The debt when George W. Bush took office was $5.727 Trillion when he left it was $10.627 Trillion. The total debt that George W accumulated in eight years of office is $4.9 Trillion The debt right now is $13.736 Trillion. In approximately 666 days in office, he has accumulated $3.066 Trillion. Using simple algebra you'll find by Dec 2011, Obama will have accumulated more debt in three years than George W. did in 8 years.

  • Hillary Clinton is being preened to take President Maobama's place. Both Obama and Hilary answer to George Soros who contributed to both and who has the mainstream media in his back pocket. He gets Obama to take the Country to extreme socialism passing treasonous legislation against the will of the American people, then gets Hillary in office. Our dollar is on the verge of collapse, and our sovereignty is threatened as a direct result of legislation and lack of leadership.

  • Clinton didn't leave a $5.6 Trillion surplus but a $1.4 trillion debt over eight years. He borrowed from Social Security, part of a $115 Trillion unfunded liability, to make it seem he left a surplus. See my about me for links. The Debt Clock should be adjusted increasing the national debt from $14.0 to $21 Trillion and reducing our unfunded liabilities by $7 Trillion to reflect the truth about Clinton.

  • hey folks we (all us lowly peons) could raise 1.4 trillion and just buy that debt off China, then we get the red carpet in Washing town. and We'd be able to stop crazy wars by threatening to SELL our newly acquired debt and ruin the whole war party. yeah, dreamin' over here

  • So what if China owns 800 billion out of a 14 trillion dollar debt? That is less than 1/14th of the debt. Plus, who cares if they own more? If they want to get paid back, they have an interest in a stable dollar. Quit eating up the media and politicians' fear mongering.

  • I don't trust the PRC, but i trust Japan completely. I know Japan will not try to exploit it, but i can't say the same about the PRC.

  • @Rocketeer1001 he is trying to say that their focus isn't on wars. Have you noticed that they hardly ever get in a conflict? America got in a lot of wars, before it even became a power. China's military is big, because they have a billion people. The us has a lot of people, and so does russia. They both have large armies. That doesn't mean that they want to participate in wars. It's sad that people support china, even though they are trying to steal tech from the US and the EU
