Major Arthur Samuel Israel "Art"
o Following his graduation from Reed College, where he majored in Chemistry, he entered military service.

o In November 1941, one month before WWII broke out he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, and assigned to the U. S. Army Chemical Corps.

o While on active duty he attended numerous Army and Army Air Corps schools, including Chemical Warfare, the Air University, and the Industrial College of Armed Forces.

o In addition to his primary duty, he also acted as Personnel Officer, Public Affairs Officer, and worked closely with the Legal Dept. as Defense Counsel, TJA and Investigating Officer for Courts Martial.

o During his service he was stationed in the U.S., Canada, and the Hawaiian Islands.

o He received multiple decorations.



§ American Defense Service medal, American Theater Service medal, Asiatic Pacific Service medal, and the WW II Victory medal.



o By the end of his 4 ½ years of service, he had been promoted to the rank of Major.

o During the later part of his military career, my father was asked to join the OSS, but decided this was not the career path he wanted to take.

After WWII, he was asked to be the Assistant to Public Relations Director of the Air Force at the Pentagon during the Korean War conflict.
