How To Fold Your Memorial Flag
Folding the Flag...and in fact...displaying a Memorial Flag is something that most people don't give much thought to. But for those of us that have lost our loved ones the Memorial flag holds a very special place in our hearts. This post will show you step by step how folding the flag properly will help you display your flag in the best way possible.
Folding the Flag Step-by-Step
It is very important that special care is taken to ensure that no part of the flag touches the ground. The Flag is to be carefully folded into the shape of a tri-cornered hat, symbolic of the hats that were worn by colonial soldiers in the war for Independence. In the process of folding, the red and white stripes are wrapped into the blue, symbolizing the light of day vanishing into the darkness of night. When folded properly you should finish with a triangular field of blue containing three stars along the bottom edge and one star near the top point of the triangle as shown below.
When folding the flag follow these steps:
**Folding the Flag is a two person job**
1) Fully open your flag and with one person at each end hold the flag parallel to the ground.
2) Fold the flag in half length wise.
3)Fold the flag in half length wise a second time. Make sure that the blue field and union of stars remains outward in full view.
4) The next step in folding the flag is to create a triangular fold beginning at the striped end of the flag. This is done by bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to the open edge.
5) You then fold the outer point inward and parallel with the open edge forming a second triangle.
6) Continue folding the flag diagonally toward the blue union until only the blue is showing and you have less than a full fold left to go. Push the excess into the crease created between the flag layers to keep your memorial flag together. The form should be that of a three-corner hat.
When you flip your flag over and see three full stars on the bottom and one on top (portions of others may show), you are done folding the flag.
@zzcanton1 The song is Scottish, and is sung in the Scottish language, however the language is not the point. The point is the lyrics, and if you would go to Google and look up "Joseph Kilna McKenzie lyrics," it should be the first result and has both the Scottish and English lyrics.
