A short by Alexander Sokurov about the significance of the land to Russia, where it has an almost spiritual meaning. "Maria" was made in memory of Russian paesant Maria Semionovna Voinova. It serves as not only a requiem for a hardworking woman but also for a way of life. Maria grew flax (a blue-flowered herbaceous plant that is cultivated for its seed (linseed) and for textile fiber made from its stalks), and after her death, her secrets and methods of working in the fields were lost.
