Motion control means to digitally record the camera movements (all lateral axes, all rotation axes and focus). This data can be used to a) let the camera repeat the movements exactly on another scene or b) to move a virtual camera in a CGI system exactly the same way. Both can then be used to compose foreground and background image layers (either real or CGI) in a way that everything matches perfectly and therefore looks realistic.

I'm surprised not to see at least one undercranked motion control shot. I thought that motion control was all about moving the camera in low FPS situations. Like the shot in "BBC Planet Earth" where the camera follows the sun in the north pole, to illustrate how it sometimes never sets. The camera does a 360 degrees following the sun at about 15-20 frames per *hour*.
