This song is originally from pre-Christian Ukraine, when New Year was celebrated in April. The song is about a swallow announcing the coming of spring and a bountiful new year to the master of the house. After Ukraine became a Christian country in 988 AD, New Year is now celebrated on Jan 14 as most Ukrainian churches still abide by the Julian calendar.
