In some versions, Clytaemnestra did not conspire with Aegisthus to kill Orestes, which sort of reduces the villainous nature in her. However, this was not realistic, as Orestes would have to be killed so as to avoid growing up to avenge his father, and assume the crown of Mycenae. Besides, Clytaemnestra was still mean to Electra, and she had no reason to kill Cassandra as well as Agamemnon. (Even Agamemnon had to obey the gods who demanded the life of Iphigenia). So she deserved what she got.

There really is a lot of Freudian psychology to be found in the Greek myths. Clytaemnestra is angry at Agamemnon for sacrificing her favorite daughter, Iphigenia, for the purpose of obtaining the proper winds to sail to Troy. She despises Electra, the favored daughter of Agamemnon (classic mother-daughter rivalry), and is indifferent to her son, Orestes, who would have been killed by her lover, Aegisthus, had a nurse not helped him escape as a child. Notice how the females dominate in this myth.

The Greek myth originally implied more than just a sibling relationship between Orestes and Electra, and remember, in many ancient cultures, notably Egypt (though not Greece), marriage between royal brothers and sisters was common.

who where the 3 women watchin every1 freak out?
Cacoyannis's "Iphigenia" is an extraordinary film. By far the best of his Euripides productions. "Electra" has good performances but doesn't really work for me as a film. It's either too stylized or not stylized enough to be successful, IMO. His "Trojan Women" is a little better but "Iphigenia" is a masterpiece.

Why oh why did he HAVE to be her brother? They have such a wonderful chemistry together, they should definitely be lovers... Or at least, the moviemaker should have choosen a less cute guy to play Orestes... Wonderful movie. I love it...
