This is the class review for the first of five lessons in The Jam Cellar's Roots & Offshoots series taught 4/1/08. Your instructor is Chanda of the Tushane Dance Company.
Chanda is an expert in Soukous, a vernacular dance which is one of many roots of swing dance. Originating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this form of dance has been modernized, much like today's swing is a descendant of the cakewalk and Texas Tommy.
Soukous benefits core strength, balance, and rhythm. For information on this form of dance and Chanda's work, email her at tushanedance@gmail.com.
The Jam Cellar is a world-reknowned weekly swing dance party held in a posh, turn of the century mansion in Northwest Washington, DC on Tuesday nights. The Jam Cellar offers class series in Lindy Hop and other swing dances for all levels of dancers taught by some of the best instructors in the world. The Jam Cellar also hosts periodic special events. For more information about The Jam Cellar visit http://www.thejamcellar.com/.

Way to break it down,Chanda! Not enough people appreciate this music and dance in America, but I have found that Washington DC is very progressive with many things of an African nature. It's a great city, and you are part of that greatness!
