A documentary by Allan King and Peter Moseley on author James Jones. Jones is perhaps best known for writing 'From Here to Eternity' as well as 'The Thin Red Line' and 'Some Came Running.' Director Nicholas Ray was a friend of Jones, and can be seen briefly in the film.
Hello, Kaylie Jones! I assumed incorrectly that your family knew of this portrait of your father produced in Canada. Nicholas Ray, who appears briefly in this film, spoke affectionately of your father, and stayed at his home in Paris for a time during the 1960s. I admired the film from your story "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries." There might be another DVD of this documentary here at home if you want it. I live in New York City. Best wishes, Kaylie! His words in this about his childhood, his time in the Army and thoughts on war are so telling... reveal so much so much about the man that I am overwhelmed. Reading his books, letters and interpretations of them by others is one thing, but hearing him speak about these things is an other.

Thank you for posting this lost treasure of literary history. I am from Robinson, Ill. and have been a fan of his works since my teens. In fact, when I was 17 I had to get a note from my mother in order to check out "Some Came Running" from the Robinson Carnegie Library.

I am completely blown away by this documentary. James Jones is my father, and I don't remember ever, ever seeing this. I remember when the crew came to the apt. to film, but I had no idea what it was for. Thank you so much for posting this. To hear and see my father like that has sent me into a bit of a state of shock. Kaylie Jones
