Liz Madison writes a column for the Marin County Voice, a small local paper. Overshadowed by the Sun, San Francisco's largest and most successful newspaper, the Voice has nonetheless carved out a small, but loyal subscriber base. But when the Sun purchases the Voice with intentions to dissolve and incorporate it, Liz decides to prove that the Voice is worth saving. She takes the initiative and creates a column about Christmas and about the joys of the season. Through word of mouth, Liz's column becomes a huge hit, generating record sales and generating hope that the Sun's owner Anthony Shepherd will keep the paper, and the staff, intact.
Vicki Shaw, the Sun's editor, doesn't want the Voice to be intact and she has mischievous plans of her own. She commissions Tom Lane the Sun's premier writer, to do a Christmas column. The only problem - Tom's not really a Christmas kind of guy. He brings his own unique perspective to his column, which, coupled with his popularity, makes for an instant hit. The columns run neck to neck in popularity. Liz and Tom are content to be rivals on paper, but when they meet for the first time, the sparks fly. They can't help but hate each other - and be completely intrigued by each other as well. When the Sun sponsors this year's Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a task normally reserved for the Voice, Liz is furious and convinced that Tom is trying to sabotage her efforts. But with the holidays coming ever closer, Liz and Tom may just find that the true meaning of Christmas is something they'll have to discover together, both on and off the page.
