  • Other than the basic melody, it's all improvisation. He's looking at the music because 1) He's reading the chords

    2) It isn't memorized (the group only rehearses 3 times before performance)

    3) It's a habit to look down instead of at the audience

His solo, his cadenza, every embellishment and idea that wasn't written by the composer is 100% Ethan Helm improvisation. But don't worry about not knowing that. Ethan's improv is so melodic that most people would think it's written.

  • does anyone know what that tune is called?

  • well equipment does matter, but not as much as the player. I don't want to lie and say you'll be exactly the same on some chinese POS as with a yanagisawa but seriously people, this guy sounds good in general. he'll sound good on a yas-23 and he'll sound good on a mark vi

  • don't give this guy a thumbs down. these gigs including ones done by professionals are often un-improvised. they don't want to take the risk so they write their own part and memorize it. honestly, if you have a performance in front of loads of people, and you had the opportunity to memorize over improvise, you'd be dumb not to take it

  • i agree, you find what works for you personally. i dont use a vi or a meyer. beechler diamond HR ftw...for me anyway.

  • He plays a Morgan.....and a Yamaha 82-Z.....

  • not another dark meyer selmer mark vi high school alto player......hell yes

  • wheee

  • well he ad libbed a ton of it.
