i used to listen to this song as a teenager with no consequence but just now at the age of 25 it has made me cry. what the hell happened?

Why would you sing along to this? The mood of the beginning is destroyed. When people sing together it creates a mood of solidarity. The beginning of the song is intentionally made to sound alone and helpless, and the audience idiotically destroys this by singing along.
