Conan sings his spin-off version of "Polk Salad Annie" (one of my favorite songs!) with his back up singers "The Cokettes" at the Nob Hill Masonic Center in San Francisco on Friday April 23, 2010 for his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour.
I was stunned when I heard the first few chords... Conan was playing one of my favorite songs ever! Could it be? He really was! He gave the song credit to Elvis... but the original was actually written and performed best by Tony Joe White himself.
About the song: Polk Salad Annie (or Poke Salad Annie) is a 1969 song written and performed by Tony Joe White. It was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Its lyrics describe the lifestyle of a generic Southern girl. Traditionally, the term to describe the type of food highlighted in the song is "poke salad." Its 1969 single release peaked at Number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Anyhow... Conan put on pretty much the best show ever and to learn that he loves this song, and performed it in such a funny and outstanding way, just blew my mind. Enjoy the show!
Had Elvis not done this song, no one would've known of it's existance - Tony Joe White made more money off this song, thanks to Elvis.
