If I had to take a guess, I'd wager it has to do with the mentality they have going into it. The type of person who's willing and wanting to do these kinds of roles. I imagine you have to have a more jovial personality to get down with a horror movie role. From my own experience, it's similar with certain styles of music. For example, you can't take yourself too seriously to play metal or what's the point? Part of the appeal is to have fun and be someone else for awhile :)
