always good to see one of these sony greats in action. i have one still in good service. it gives the thin weak sound of compact disc a major thrashing! i am so glad the cd has had its day. lets get back to solid analogue!!! (and vinyl) thanks for posting an awesome machine playing an awesome track. keep it reel.

Could be the Sony tape, I have both bad and good tapes by Sony, some become muffled because of the age, but others plays fine.
Try and see what the 377 can do at 3-3/4.
Keep me posted Matt and good luck,

Thank you, these need a little fine tuning and high bias tape.
Maxell or similar for good quality at 3-3/4 speed.
Have you tried high bias tape Matt ?

I have one of these, and have replaced all the rubber belts and it plays fine. Mine will not record at 3 3/4 speed at anywhere near this quality. I would use it a lot more if I could tweak it to the standard you have achieved. I am very impressed!
Where do you find all your treasures?! If these old decks could talk, I bet they could tell some stories! Keep up the excellent work~

Thanks for your advice. I have tried a high bias tape and indeed the recording quality is much better at 3 3/4. At 7 1/2, it's superb! Keep on reelin' ! :)

@matt150172, You welcome Matt, glad the Sony worked better with high bias tape.
Try find some Maxell (gold) or buy new fresh tape from US-Recording Media,
they have a good selection and nice people to deal with.

I do have a couple of reels of high bias tape by Sony (the dark tape and reel variety). I will try it out today. I know I have had good results at 7 1/2 speed, but the high frequency response does drop a little. I am only disappointed because I have a mono Truvox reel machine that makes superb recordings at 3 3/4 and would like similar on the Sony. Thanks for your advice and time to reply, I will set up the sony now for some experiments :)

Just checked the video, this tape is a Maxell (gold) high bias tape.
Most of the time with Sony 366 or 377 I use 'normal tape" when recording at 7-1/2 speed and high bias for 3-3/4 if possible, otherwise with normal tape (Ampex 631) the sound can become little muffled on 3-3/4.
