Madison County GOP Lincoln/Reagan Day Dinner remarks from Andy Webb who is a candidate for the 47th District North Carolina State Senate.

Andy held his first elected office beginning December 1999 as a McDowell County Commissioner. Webb was re-elected in 2004 and 2008, serving as Chairman six of those years.

Andys strong work ethic began at home and at his first job at Flowers Store on Sugar Hill Road in Marion in the early 1970s. After high school, he earned an Associate Degree in Business Marketing at Asheville-Buncombe Community College. "My older brother and I lived in a small trailer in Asheville and, like many we worked our way through school. Dad and Mom helped out when they could." After graduation Andy began his business career with The Northwestern Bank.

In 1981, he took employment with Morris Wholesale, which he later purchased in 1983, and to this day he is know as the Candy Man.
For many years I have had the opportunity to earn the patronage of locally owned and operated businesses, pharmacies, schools, fund raisers and institutional accounts. Interaction in the community has been an important part of Andys career as he progressed in the arena of public service. My focus early as a commissioner was to understand how local government worked and to gradually insert myself into issues and policy decisions that created better opportunities for our county. Local government priorities include public education, annual budgeting, economic development, and emergency and law enforcement support. Issues such as land buffers and water withdrawals from the Catawba River are just a few but important topics of commissioner responsibilities. Addressing issues through realistic experience has positioned me an opportunity to serve 175,000 people in Haywood, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery and McDowell Counties.

Understanding local needs and the ability to manage within the resources available is a very important part of leadership. Elected officials must set priorities and not over promise. Efficient management and quality service are reasonable expectations from the taxpayer. This applies also to state government. I am anxious to move forward with my campaign. Citizens want accountable, open leadership through limited government. I will continue to keep those principles a top priority.

According to Commissioner Webb, a complete and simple restructuring of the income tax system that attracts businesses, job creation, and retirees which also reduces the tax burden on North Carolinians should be the first of reforms, including the reduction of size and scope of state government. North Carolina cannot sustain the level of services and taxation on working families it has created. Self-sufficiency must return as the standard of a civil and free society. The intrusion of more government into our lives is unacceptable. These reforms will require experience and the will to stand firm. I have a proven record in my home county of limited government and low taxes, as well as the vision to move forward for future generations.

Andy and his wife Vicki of 25 years have three children A.J., Cameron and Mary Catherine. They reside in the Pleasant Gardens Community of McDowell County. A.J.,is a 5th generation lumberman and graduate of N.C. State University. Cameron, a sophomore at Western Carolina University, is majoring in education with a concentration in Biology. Mary, a very active junior at McDowell High School, is a member of the varsity basketball and volleyball teams.
