Advance... Combustion flame travels at constant speed... but at higher engine RPM's, the piston is moving so fast the spark plug has no time to burn all the fuel-air mixture. By advancing the ignition timing (in degrees BTDC), gives more time for the flame to burn. You can see the effect of the retarded (pun intended) original CDI these days, whereby even colder spark plug terminals turn white!
Retarding the ignition is for ease of starting and low RPM torque (i.e. pickup).
