I agree...what a waste of time...not like he was roughing out a log where there is a rough surface to deal with so we have to do the the click click dance ...all that just to sell a mask.....and I use to like this guy...
It wasn't clear till I looked closely, but it appeared that first cuts were with the inside/right wing of the gouge. That would result in a big catch. Personal preference is to roll the gouge/flutes more to the left so that the nose of the gouge is doing the cutting.

Why not just plane down the exotic wood wedge lengthwise to make it 95% flush to the wheel, then turn the whole piece?
