MetLife Claims Paralyzed Woman Not Disabled.

Sacramento, California - Sharon Graves, paralyzed from the waist down, is suing MetLife for the right to be more than the sum of her parts. Sharon was paralyzed when she was a teenager. Even though paralyzed she was able to work as an accountant for over 20 years. During those 20 years the strain of operating a manual wheelchair destroyed her shoulder joints. She is left with little arm strength and needs an aide dog to help her with daily tasks.

Sharon had a disability policy with MetLife. MetLife claimed someone with worn out shoulders and without arm strength is not disabled. It is ignoring the fact she is also paralyzed from the waist down. Under the law as it now stands the insurance company selects the information it will review and then determines whether that information supports disability. It acts as lawyer, judge and jury.

Sharon Graves is fighting back. She filed a Complaint with the Federal Court. It will now be up a Federal Judge to decide if MetLife can look at just parts of Sharon's disability, or if the insurance company must evaluate her total condition when it determines if she is disabled.
