SUCCESSFUL WHALE RESCUE AT JAMAICA'S PALMYRA RESORT & SPA
ROSE HALL, MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA -- A pilot whale, estimated to be about 15 feet long and weighting 1,200 pounds, yesterday beached in the white sand swimming cove of Jamaicas luxurious Palmyra Resort and Spa.
According to Palmyra's General Manager Lester Scott the mammal, which appeared to be disoriented, was spotted at about 11:55 am swimming in the shallow waters in close proximity to the resort's beach. Curious staff members from the Palmyra Resort were on hand to get a look at the mammal while it stayed in the shallow waters for almost half-an-hour. Marine Mammal specialist Deloy Peharie (left) and a landscape architect Kevin Rosen helped the pilot whale out into the ocean.
But after several attempts -- with the assistance of two marine mammal specialists from a nearby resort -- the mammal was successfully guided into the deep waters.
What I find amazing in most cases of whale rescue, is that it seems as if the whale understands what the humans are doing... either that, or they're too fatigued to care.

The resort put the rocks there to calm the waves down, creating a calm swimming area.
