The gathering of the 1960 Pirates recall the highlights of Game 7 culminating in Mazeroski's "walk-off" home run which won the game and the Series,10-9. This clip concludes with final words from Maz.
@AnBon74 . The reason for Richardson was that he and Tony Kubek were the go-between to the media. They gave interviews and diaries of what supposedly went on during the series. Mantle and Maris never talked to the media unless forced and both of them treated writers with disdain and hatred at times. The Yankees like Richardson and Kubek because they signed autographs to fans and talked to writers but never snitched on what went on till JIm Bouton.
@Ariamaluum YUP, I have a VHS tape with all the highlights on it, and one of them was Don Hoak's double play ball (too young to remember the game lol). STILL, I think Maz should have gotten the MVP, not Richardson, despite having a great series. Hell, I would even go with what you said, and given it to Vernon Law. I just don't understand how the losing team ends up with a most valuable player award. Where is the value in it if ya lost??
@AnBon74. Richardson had a great game 3. If it was a Yankee, I would have given it to Mantle with his hitting, fielding, and baserunning. For the Pirates, I would have given it to Vern Law. Had Murtaugh not taken him out with a 4-1 lead, Vern would have won 3 games. He got a key hit in that 3-2 win in Game 4. The turning point was the fielding of Don Hoak in that game. Bases-loaded, Yogi hits a grounder and Don tags third and throws to first on a bang-bang play. The movie City Slickers.
Maz should have been World Series MVP. Richardson had a great series, BUT his team lost! Not only did Mazeroski hit the greatest home run ever hit, he also had a 2 run homer in an earlier game and a 2-run single as well.
