A slight correction to make, it was Blackburns ford where the 17th Virginia saw some fierce action and did in fact earn the sobriquet 'The Bloody 17th' this is from both George wise's History of the 17th and Edgar Warfields Manassas to Appomatox memoirs both of whom served in Co. H Old Dominion rifles, Also a letter left by Johnston of Co. B had P.S we are members of the 'Bloody 17th'-the well merited sobriquet of our Regiment gained in the Battle of Bull Run (Blackburn's Ford)

@MattOGuinness Sorry to correct you man, but the REAL 17th Va. Volunteer Infantry, (THE REAL FULL PROPER NAME FOR IT) was at Ball's Ford away from the major fighting at First Manassas , we saw some limited action BUT we were not the the "Bloody 17th" until later in the war and I'm going off the unit's history and after action reports written by the officers and riflemen of the unit. The book I go by is one of only 1200 like it in the world and was sent to the survivors after the war was over.

doronpainter, the 17th were in picketts division at gettysburg but did not take part, our claim to fame is 1st manassas where we earned the nickname the bloody 17th
